Is CBD Psychoactive?

 

Cannabidiol what many of us refer to as CBD is an allosteric modulator.  Allosteric modulator means that it can increase or decrease receptor signals likelihood to transmit signals, like an opening or closing a door within your cell membranes.  Cannabidiol is a negative allosteric modulator.  It binds with a CB1 receptor that is comprised of 472 amino acids that make up a protein. This is not the only thing to bond with CB1, tetrahydrocannabinol THC does as well within the “orthosteric” binding site.  

The difference within how they bond is that the CBD molecule changes the shape of the receptor when binding, whereas THC fits basically locking perfectly within the binding site similar to how anandamide and 2AG also presented in marijuana turns on some of the same signaling mechanisms.  When CBD bonds with the allosteric module the cells activity is affected by the cell's membrane that has many receptors inclusive of all types of messenger molecules. In order for these binding sites to be altered the allosteric modulator has to be accompanied by a stimulated orthosteric binding site that's been stimulated.  Which means that in order for CBD to be effective within the CB1 receptor it has to be joined by the good old friend THC or something else that stimulates the orthosteric binding site within a CB1 receptor in the cell membrane.

In conclusion, CBD is a negative allosteric modulator that is considered an antipsychotic, anxiolytic, and antidepressant that alters one's mood. So that within the use of cannabidiol CBD it relieves anxiety or depression or psychosis, without the euphoric state of mind accompanied within tetrahydrocannabinol.  Demonstrating that CBD mentally altering in some ways, but just not like THC.
